We decided on Central Ideas because teachers&#8217; questions about these regularly come up on professional networking groups. As someone who is conceptually trained and has worked with thousands of teachers to develop Central Ideas, I believe that having a clear understanding of what is behind a Central Idea can really influence the successful guidance of a unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-a-central-idea\"><strong>Creating a Central Idea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">When creating or refining Central Ideas I refer strongly to the work of Dr Lynn H. Erickson. Her definition of a generalisation is a very useful scaffold for generating clear conceptual statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1001\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Lock-Illustration_Final_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Lock-Illustration_Final_1.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Lock-Illustration_Final_1-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Lock-Illustration_Final_1-768x552.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Reproduced with the kind permission of Dr Lynn Erickson (slide from Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction Workshop)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">In the webinar we consider how to identify the concepts which will guide the unit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Having a clear conceptual statement that every team member understands and is able to unpack, both supports the connection of related concepts and drives learning forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">If we know what we are aiming for, it gives clarity to the process that we use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-central-idea-guidance\"><strong>Central Idea Guidance\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The Central Idea Guidance provided below can be used to review Central Ideas and as a guide when developing completely new ones. This was synthesised from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/programmes\/primary-years-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IB guidelines<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/blog_post\/prescription-for-play-learning-from-lynn-cuccaros-workshop-at-ties-the-inquiry-educators-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">learnings from Lynn\u2019s training<\/a> into some guidance for Central Ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1001\" height=\"708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Central-Idea-Guidance_checklist-copy-3_2-A.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Central-Idea-Guidance_checklist-copy-3_2-A.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Central-Idea-Guidance_checklist-copy-3_2-A-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Central-Idea-Guidance_checklist-copy-3_2-A-768x543.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>We don\u2019t always hit them all, but I have four non-negotiables:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1001\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Non-negotiables_Final_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Non-negotiables_Final_1.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Non-negotiables_Final_1-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Resized_Non-negotiables_Final_1-768x369.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-consider-an-example\"><strong>Let\u2019s Consider an Example:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Survival depends on adapting to circumstances<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">This is one of my favourite Central Ideas, developed with a G4 team at KIS.&nbsp; Two macro concepts \u2013 <strong>\u2018Survival\u2019<\/strong> and <strong>\u2018Adaptation\u2019 <\/strong>linked by a strong verb<strong> \u2018depends\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">This transfers beautifully through science, social studies and PSPE. It is clearly a big idea. It\u2019s short, everyone understands it and we were able to suggest lots of examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>What examples might you think of that exemplify that central idea?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-reflect-on-the-process\"><strong>Let\u2019s Reflect on the Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Like everything else in our IB ecosystem, the process of developing a Central Idea can vary widely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>There is no one \u2018right\u2019 way to develop a Central Idea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Read that again<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>There is no one \u2018right\u2019 way to develop a Central Idea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The process I share on the webinar is \u2018starting from scratch\u2019 to develop a new Central Idea. I am an advocate for referencing the curriculum early in this process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Why?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Because we can find conceptual understandings there&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because we can share our thinking around common understandings&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because collaboration doesn\u2019t mean pulling ideas from thin air!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The Toddle Talks Webinar \u2018Getting to Grips with Central Ideas\u2019 outlines a process which can be used for developing new Central Ideas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"843\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Process-Guide_Checklist.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Process-Guide_Checklist.jpg 843w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Process-Guide_Checklist-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Process-Guide_Checklist-768x543.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">You may also find it helpful to use different parts of this process when revising Central Ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">As a coordinator, I also like to read more widely about the topic to ensure that we are truly exploring ideas with resonance and merit. For new Central Ideas I will share a summary of this research with the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scaffold-thinking\"><strong>Scaffold Thinking\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">If you are redeveloping a Central Idea, you may find that the three tiered \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.in\/Concept-Based-Curriculum-Instruction-Classroom-Essentials-ebook\/dp\/B07C6JZBTH\/ref=asc_df_B07C6JZBTH\/?tag=googleshopdes-21&amp;linkCode=df0&amp;hvadid=399204765839&amp;hvpos=&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvrand=15576971481627552092&amp;hvpone=&amp;hvptwo=&amp;hvqmt=&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvdvcmdl=&amp;hvlocint=&amp;hvlocphy=9062235&amp;hvtargid=pla-812268293923&amp;psc=1&amp;ext_vrnc=hi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scaffolding Thinking to Complex Levels<\/a>\u2019 by Lynn H. Erickson is useful to you. This process uses two simple questions to \u2018level up\u2019 vague or confusing Central Ideas and is exemplified on the webinar. I am exceedingly grateful for Dr Erickson\u2019s permission to use this image outside of her authorised training, and highly recommend the  \u2018Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/cbi.prolearnint.com\/pli-all-courses-5799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">workshop<\/a> for those of you interested to extend your understanding of conceptual learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-deconstruct-to-reconstruct\"><strong>We Deconstruct to Reconstruct\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Because everyone has a different context \u2013 it\u2019s not good practice just to \u2018copy\u2019 another school\u2019s Central Idea. However there are a limited number of truly resonant BIG IDEAS, and we can all use inspiration. &nbsp; Use other people\u2019s Central Ideas for inspiration by all means, but take your team through a process of thinking and constructing a shared understanding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Teachers must have a level of ownership and understanding of the thinking behind a Central Idea.
