The young learner is strong, intelligent and beautiful, with ambitious desires and requests and as teachers, we need to keep their choice and agency in the centre of the learning My image of a 5-year-old child is very similar to that of Loris Malaguzzi\u2019s. Whilst designing the learning experiences, I thought a lot about the Reggio Emilia approach and the wise words of Malaguzzi. I aimed to \u201cproduce situations in which children learn by themselves, in which children can take advantage of their own knowledge and resources autonomously, and in which we guarantee the intervention of the adult as little as possible. We don\u2019t want to teach children something that they can learn by themselves. We don\u2019t want to give them thoughts that they can come up with by themselves. What we want to do is activate within children the desire and will and great pleasure that comes from being the authors of their own learning\u201d (Malaguzzi, 1994).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-planning-process\"><strong>Planning Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Planning in the early years is like playing a game of snakes and ladders. Keeping play at the centre, I thought of the planning process as a game of snakes and ladders. I used the <a style='color:#f75961;' href='https:\/\/thinkingpathwayz.weebly.com\/thinkpuzzleexplore.html' target='_blank'>\n                Think Puzzle Explore<\/a> thinking routine by\n                Harvard's Project Zero to help me move forward in the planning\n                process. I wanted to put these puzzle pieces together to create a\n                    unit that teachers could get inspired by, and use in their own\n                    classrooms. The first was, how do I make my thinking about\n                    the planning process visible? Since I\u2019m a visual learner, I decided to\n                    do so by connecting my thinking to the idea of a jigsaw puzzle,\n                    bridge, and a snakes and ladders game. \n                <\/span>\n                <br\/>\n                <br\/>\n                <span> \n                    The second question I asked was, how can student agency be\n                    supported in a virtual learning environment? According to the IBO,\n                    \u201cAgency is present when students partner with teachers and\n                    members of the learning community to take charge of what, where,\n                    why, with whom and when they learn.\u201d \n                <\/span>\n                <br\/>\n                <br\/>\n                <span> \n                    Student choice, voice and ownership are integral to the learning\n                    experiences I designed. I thought of objects and artefacts that get kids\n                    interested, using powerful pictures and a wonder wall to pique their\n                    curiosity. Role-play learning experiences are also a good way to\n                    encourage children to have some ownership over their learning\n                    space. Due to\n                    COVID-19, early year learners are spending the majority of their\n                    time at home interacting with parents and siblings. Therefore, students will be\n                given opportunities to be innovative and think of creative ways to\n                provide community services keeping safety and social distancing\n                norms in mind. For the unit on Goods and Services, I wanted to focus on Form,\n                    Function, Connection and Responsibility. Keeping the pandemic\n                    world in mind, I realized that the concept of responsibility would be\n                    my main focus to drive student action. Form, Function and\n                    Connection were important in getting the students to understand\n                    the interconnectedness of needs and services that support these\n                    needs. After identifying these concepts, I re-examined the lines of\n                    inquiry and thought of questions or provocations that would help\n                    unpack and drive conceptual understanding. \n                <\/span>\n                <br\/><br\/>\n                <span> \n                    For example, to unpack the concept of Form, students will focus on\n                    the first line of inquiry and examine the needs and wants of the\n                    community. They will engage in learning experiences such as the\n                    field trip to observe the needs of the school or home community and\n                    draw conclusions about goods and services needed to meet those\n                    needs. Using social media is a great way to stay\n                    connected and learn from one another. I found my personal learning\n                    network on Twitter and recently through some Facebook groups.\n                    <a style='color:#f75961;' href='https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/community\/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=learning library&utm_campaign=community&utm_content= Planning a virtual unit of inquiry for the early years - Putting the Pieces Together' target='_blank'>  \n                    Toddle Community<\/a> is also an amazing way to share and learn\n                    together with like-minded PYP teachers. Even before I created my\n                    own unit on Toddle Community, I spent some time exploring the\n                    wide range of unit plans and learning experiences created by PYP\n                    educators like me, and it truly is inspirational. \n                <\/span>\n                <br\/><br\/>\n                <span> \n                    As important as it is for us to stay connected, it is even more\n                    important to create opportunities for students to belong to a\n                    learning community. Giving students opportunities to collaborate\n                    and share online will help them develop a sense of belonging. Through play,\n                students communicate, reflect, problem-solve and demonstrate\n                growth in ATLs and attributes of the Learner Profile. While\n                observing play is challenging in a virtual setting, we can monitor\n                progress on an ongoing basis by partnering with parents and giving\n                them the required tools for assessment.\n                <\/span>\n                <br\/> <br\/>\n                <span> \n                To be able to effectively create assessment strategies for this unit, I\n                asked myself and you can ask yourself:\n                <\/span>\n                <ul>\n                <li style='font-size:18px'>What evidence can parents gather about their child's emerging\n                knowledge, conceptual understandings and skills? \n                <\/li>\n                <li style='font-size:18px'>During remote\/home learning, how are teachers monitoring and\n                documenting learning against learning goals and success\n                criteria?\n                <\/li>\n                <li style='font-size:18px'>How can we enable parents and young learners to use\n                self-assessments and feedback to inform planning and next\n                steps?<\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n           \n            <span> \n                Whenever and wherever possible, I create opportunities for students\n                to practise self-assessing. In learning experiences, I provide ways\n                for students and the parents\/teachers to be actively engaged in\n                providing feedback using the <a style='color:#f75961;' href='https:\/\/www.toddleapp.com\/remote-learning\/' target='_blank'>  \n                Toddle Student App<\/a>.
