When supporting students in their preparation for Paper 1, here are some crucial aspects you should focus on: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>How to produce a relevant text type to respond to a given situation<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>How to develop a conceptual understanding of the situation <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"mb-16 wp-block-heading\"><em>Select and produce a relevant text type<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step for students towards producing a written response is choosing a situation. You will find a list of text types, along with samples, that students would need to be familiarised with <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1ACPAOP55O6JkIjutRDlhRmMJFV-shtMqz6PYXQE6xPY\/copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>. Conceptual understanding of the situation in Paper 1 refers to the <strong>audience, message, purpose, context<\/strong>, and <strong>variation<\/strong>, as illustrated below: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/codahosted.io\/docs\/7nZtmPbFi9\/blobs\/bl-vL7PgvsJX_\/8c2e08e031e2547343b2a1e35630b71b9ecc12cbe747bbf82766272a8f6210425c8c450f4ce4300a28374c989d2ebaac403e3dda7181baa71e32a6aca02a5eabb3bbe9f7777efe5e9521b6f3d6713967b187cb1de7efbfd2aa06bed0d0ed2d9112317670\" alt=\"image.png\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students&#8217; abilities to read, write, and speak will gain nuance when you teach them how audience, purpose, meaning, variation, place, and time relate to what is being communicated. You can guide students toward showing their conceptual understanding of a text through their written responses. When writing, ask them to think about the audience, for example. How would an author write for a different audience? How would they change what they are writing if it were for their teacher instead of a friend? When you ask students questions like these you help them develop skills to produce effective texts themselves. You also help them reflect on these different concepts. Take a look at some of the sample questions in the table below to get your students thinking about the conceptual understanding of a situation.
