Lesson 5: Self and Social Awareness with AI
Lesson overview
In this lesson, students will explore the human side of AI. How our values, beliefs, and experiences shape the way we use it. They’ll learn how bias can show up in AI systems, consider how different communities are affected by AI, and use the Circle of Perspectives routine to step into viewpoints beyond their own.
- As a teacher, watch the Self and Social Awareness with AI video independently first.
- As a class, watch the video together.
- Complete Exercise 5: Circle of Perspectives to explore multiple viewpoints around the ethical, social, and environmental impacts of AI. Students will examine how bias shows up in AI systems and practice considering different perspectives on real-world AI use cases.
Lesson objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Identify examples of bias, ethical concerns, and social impact in AI use.
- Consider how different people or groups might experience AI differently.
- Use the Circle of Perspectives routine to explore multiple viewpoints.

Exercise 5: Circle of Perspectives
Lesson resources:
Step 1: Choose a Debate
As a class, choose a debate about AI to discuss together. You can select one from this list or come up with your own:
- Should our school website use AI-generated images instead of real student photos to protect privacy?
- Should AI influencers be allowed on YouTube and TikTok?
- Should schools be allowed to use AI to monitor what students do online?
- Should people be allowed to copy a celebrity’s voice or face with AI, even as a joke?
Step 2: Work Through the Circle of Perspectives Routine
- Individually reflect: How do I feel about this issue?
- As a class, brainstorm: Who might have an opinion on this topic? Make a list of different perspectives (e.g. a student, a parent, an AI developer, a principal).
- Assign roles: Each student (or pair) takes on one of the perspectives.
- Complete the Circle of Perspectives template from that point of view.
- Discuss as a class: Stay in role and share your perspective, even if it’s different from your own.
- Revisit your view: Do you still feel the same? Did anyone’s argument change your thinking?
What’s next
In lesson 6, we will explore the skill of Collaborating with AI.
We’ve created an AI edition of the SAMR model that will help you brainstorm ways you might use AI on tasks and choose the most appropriate use.
