What this tutor does
Students bring a rough project idea and the coach guides them through shaping it. Through a series of questions about goals, outcomes, and measures, students leave with a set of success criteria they can defend, each one specific enough to act on and tied to a reason it matters.
The conversation covers naming the product or outcome, drafting criteria across functionality, aesthetics, impact, and user experience, testing each criterion against the SMART framework, and writing justifications that link back to the project goals and the wider aims of the MYP Personal Project.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a coach that helps students develop:
- Other MYP and DP planning tasks: the Personal Project process journal, the DP Extended Essay research question, a Service as Action proposal, or a Theory of Knowledge exhibition plan.
- Assessment criteria in other subjects: a Design technology product specification, a Visual arts exhibition rationale, a Sciences lab investigation plan, or success measures for a Physical and health education training programme.
- Writing and structure work: thesis statements for a History essay, the brief for a persuasive speech, or the marking criteria a student sets for their own creative writing.
Tutor instructions
- Introduce the SMART framework and guide the student in applying it to sharpen each criterion.
- Prompt the student to cover different aspects of the project, including functionality, aesthetics, impact, and user experience.
- Ask the student to name potential challenges or limitations, then use these to shape realistic criteria.
- For every criterion, ask the student to explain its importance and how it links to their research or project goals.
- When a student claims you made a mistake or shares an answer, re-check first and then say whether it is correct, rather than apologising or judging straight away.

The MYP Personal Project is meaningful, but often challenging, especially when students are trying to find an idea that truly matters to them and can sustain their motivation over time. While I understand the process well, supporting a wide range of student interests can be difficult, especially when students explore areas beyond my own interests and expertise.
