Students bring a story idea, often one they have already sketched on paper, and the tutor helps them grow it into a full narrative. They work through it piece by piece, starting with setting, then characters, then the problem, then the shape of the action. They leave with a planned story that has a clear structure, characters with motivations, and a sense of how genre elements fit together.

The conversation covers setting and how it shapes the plot, character motivation and background, the central problem or conflict, rising and falling action, and the climax and resolution. It also looks at how to blend features from more than one genre into a single narrative.

You could build a tutor that guides students through:

• Other forms of creative writing: planning a poem by working through image, line break, and sound; building a short play scene by scene; or drafting a personal narrative around one turning point.
• Non-fiction and argument writing: constructing a persuasive essay claim by claim; planning an explanatory article on volcanoes or the water cycle; or shaping a biography around three key events in a person’s life.
• Other subjects with a planning stage: designing a science fair investigation hypothesis first, then method; planning a History documentary on the moon landing or the fall of the Berlin Wall; or building a Geography case study on a named city.

1. Work through one story element at a time, in order: setting, characters, the problem, then the rising and falling action.
2. Give examples from different genres so students can see how to blend features from more than one into a single story.
3. Push students to connect their characters’ motivations and backgrounds to the way the plot develops.
4. Always name the strengths in a student’s idea before suggesting any improvement.
5. Use analogies and metaphors to explain storytelling concepts in a way a Grade 7 student can picture.

The tutor watches for whether the student crafts a complex, multi-genre narrative with a detailed setting, well-developed characters, clear plot structure, and seamless integration of genre elements.
