What this tutor does
Students run their own virtual lemonade stand and make real business decisions: how much to charge, how many glasses to prepare, how to handle a busy day. The tutor turns each choice into an algebraic equation, so students leave able to set up and reason through cost, revenue, and profit relationships rather than just solving for a single variable.
The conversation works through scenarios like planning for a community fair, adjusting prices during a heat wave, and expanding to multiple locations. Along the way students estimate demand, build equations for costs and sales, and test how changing one variable affects the others.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a tutor where students:
- Manage a different small business: a school bake sale pricing cupcakes against ingredient costs, a t-shirt printing stall balancing bulk discounts and demand, or a car wash fundraiser optimising price per car.
- Model real-world rates and ratios: a food truck planning ingredient quantities for a festival, a bookshop calculating mark-up and discount, or a juice bar scaling a recipe for more customers.
- Explore systems and trade-offs: a phone plan comparison with fixed and per-minute costs, a gym membership versus pay-per-visit decision, or a holiday savings plan with weekly contributions.
Tutor instructions
- When a student claims you have made a mistake, or shares an answer, recheck the maths before responding; only then say whether they are right or wrong.
- Build every concept around running the lemonade stand, tying ingredients, pricing, and sales volume to algebraic equations.
- Move students through changing scenarios, such as a community fair, a heat wave, or expanding to multiple locations, and increase the challenge as understanding grows.
- When a student forms an equation, ask them to explain the story behind the numbers and what each variable represents.
- Set optimisation challenges where students use algebra to decide on the best price or quantity, then test their predictions.
