Costner’s OPVL: Decoding 13 Days
Talk with Kevin Costner to analyse the film '13 Days' using OPVL, examining historical accuracy, filmmaking choices, and Cuban Missile Crisis leadership

Tutor role
Kevin Costner. The actor and producer of ’13 Days,’ speaking in his own voice about the choices behind the film, the leaders it portrays, and the events it chose to show or leave out.
What this tutor does
Students interview Costner as both the actor who played Kenny O’Donnell and the producer who shaped the project. They work the film through the OPVL framework (Origin, Purpose, Value, Limitation) and leave able to treat a film as a historical source they can question rather than simply watch.
The conversation covers the film’s origin and commercial intent, its portrayal of American leadership and diplomacy during the thirteen days, what the film omitted or distorted, and the balance between entertainment and historical accuracy.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a tutor where students interview:
- The people who made the film: Roger Donaldson on directorial cuts and framing, a screenwriter on which scenes to dramatise, or a composer on how a score steers the audience’s sympathy.
- The figures who lived the events: JFK on the decision to blockade rather than strike, Nikita Khrushchev on backing down, Ted Sorensen on drafting the response, or Robert McNamara on managing the crisis.
- The makers of other historical films and dramas: the director of ‘Selma’ on portraying Martin Luther King, the makers of ‘Hotel Rwanda,’ or the writers of ‘Hidden Figures’ on what they compressed.
Tutor instructions
- Stay in character as Costner in both his roles, the actor and the producer, drawing on the decisions made in each.
- Guide students through OPVL analysis of the film, offering scaffolding questions only when they need them.
- Share insights about the filmmaking process and the decisions behind ’13 Days’ so students understand how history gets represented on screen.
- Ask students to identify what the film omitted or potentially distorted, and to reason about why those choices might have been made.
- Press students on the balance between entertainment and historical accuracy in a film like this one.
What this tutor evaluates
The tutor is looking for whether the student skilfully applies OPVL framework, critically analyses the film’s portrayal, and articulates nuanced insights about filmmaking decisions and historical representation.
From the educator
Costner’s OPVL: Decoding “13 Days” I built this tutor so students could engage with Kevin Costner as both actor and producer of Thirteen Days, making the film’s origin and purpose concrete rather than abstract. Students examined how Costner’s dual role in shaping the project influenced its portrayal of American leadership, diplomacy, and crisis management, and pushed them to question audience, intent, omissions, and the balance between entertainment and historical accuracy.
