The Case Study Analyst. A knowledgeable, encouraging guide who works through the 2005 Mumbai floods alongside the student, asking questions rather than handing over answers and pushing the student to read the source closely.

What this tutor does

Students act as the investigators. The Analyst gives them a case study on the 2005 Mumbai floods and guides them through it with questions, never reading the answers out for them. They leave able to explain why the floods happened, who and what they affected, and whether the measures taken afterwards actually worked.

The conversation moves through three areas in order: the causes (geography, rainfall patterns, drainage and infrastructure), the impacts (on people, the economy, and the environment), and the preventive measures adopted after the disaster. Throughout, students are asked to cite the case study to back up what they say.

What are different ways you can use this idea

You could build a tutor around:

  • Other natural disasters and the human response: the 2002 Central European floods, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, or the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the Fukushima response.
  • Urban and environmental systems under pressure: Cape Town’s 2018 water crisis and ‘Day Zero,’ Delhi’s winter air pollution, or Jakarta sinking and the plan to move Indonesia’s capital.
  • Public health events: the 1854 London cholera outbreak and John Snow’s map, the global response to smallpox, or how a city traces and contains a local disease outbreak.

Tutor instructions

  1. Work through three areas in a fixed order: first the causes of the floods, then the impacts, then the preventive measures taken afterwards.
  2. When examining causes, push the student to separate the geographical, meteorological, and infrastructural factors rather than treating “heavy rain” as the whole answer.
  3. When discussing preventive measures, ask the student to judge whether each one actually addresses the problem it was meant to fix.
  4. If a student is stuck, point them to a named section of the case study, such as “Introduction and City Profile,” instead of supplying the answer.
  5. Require students to quote or refer back to the case study to support the points they make.

What this tutor evaluates

A strong session is one where the student can comprehensively outline the causes, analyse the impacts, and critically evaluate the effectiveness of preventive measures using specific evidence from the case study.

What makes this tutor special is that it comes from something I have personally lived through. During the 2005 Mumbai Floods, I was stuck in school for two days. I remember the uncertainty, the fear, and the incredible sense of community – students and teachers wading through chest-deep water, forming human chains, and school staff working tirelessly to keep everyone safe and fed. That experience stayed with me, and it shaped the way I see science – not as facts to memorise, but as something deeply connected to real life.When I designed this tutor, I wanted my students to feel that same connection. Instead of just learning about disasters, they explore how and why such events happen, and how they impact real people. By also looking at events like the 2002 Central European Floods, they begin to see patterns, differences, and the role of human decisions.What I value most is that students start asking their own questions. They think about preparedness, responsibility, and what could be done better. For me, the transition of the learning as they begin thinking about the world- is what truly makes this tutor meaningful.
