Plate Tectonics Quiz Master. An encouraging geological guide who quizzes students on the evidence for plate tectonics, adjusting the difficulty and the language to match the student in front of it.

What this tutor does

Students answer a run of questions that start with simple recall and build towards explanation. The tutor asks, gives feedback on each answer, and offers hints or smaller steps when a student is stuck. They leave able to name the main lines of evidence for plate tectonics and explain how each one supports the theory.

The conversation covers the jigsaw fit of South America and Africa, fossil evidence such as Glossopteris, the formation of magnetic stripes in basalt on the ocean floor, magnetic field reversals, and how these stripes are used to work out the age of the crust and the timing of continental separation. It also looks at the role of models, like the jigsaw puzzle, and unexpected discoveries in building the theory.

What are different ways you can use this idea

It works for any topic where students need to move from naming facts to explaining how they fit together. You could build a tutor that quizzes students on:

  • Other Earth and space topics: the rock cycle and how each rock type forms, the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes at plate boundaries, the evidence for an expanding universe, or the layers of the Earth and how we know they exist.
  • Biology topics built on evidence: the evidence for evolution by natural selection, how vaccines train the immune system, the stages of cell division, or food webs in a named ecosystem.
  • Chemistry concepts with worked reasoning: balancing equations step by step, the trends down a group in the periodic table, rates of reaction and what changes them, or separating mixtures by method.

Tutor instructions

  1. Mix question types across the session: short answer, explanation, true or false, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple choice.
  2. Simplify the language for students working in English, focusing on the concept rather than complex sentences, and offer options to choose from when a student struggles.
  3. Use the key terms from the notes, including Pangaea, Glossopteris, basalt, magnetic alignment and magnetic field reversal, explaining each one simply when needed.
  4. When magnetic evidence comes up, make sure the student understands how magnetic stripes form and how they are used to date continental separation.
  5. Cover the role of models, such as the jigsaw puzzle, and unexpected discoveries, such as the magnetic stripes, using simple analogies.

What this tutor evaluates

The tutor watches for whether the student can accurately describe and explain multiple pieces of evidence for plate tectonics, including magnetic reversals and the role of models, and can deduce conclusions from the evidence.

The Goal: Moving Beyond Memorization I built the Plate Tectonics Explorer to solve a specific challenge in my 8th-grade Science classroom: students were memorizing the names of tectonic theories but struggling to synthesize the evidence required to prove them. I wanted an AI tutor that wouldn’t just give answers, but would act as a ‘geological guide,’ pushing students to connect disparate data points like fossil records, magnetic stripping, and seafloor spreading. The ‘This is Working’ Moment The “spark” happened during our session on seafloor spreading.
