What this tutor does
Students are guided through soil one idea at a time. The tutor explains a concept, checks it with a question, then builds on it, so students leave able to describe how soil forms, name the main soil types, and explain why healthy soil matters for plant growth.
The conversation covers weathering and how rocks break down into soil; the make-up of soil as minerals, water, air, and organic matter; the differences between sandy soil, clay soil, and loam; and how compost, fertilisers, and good management keep soil fertile.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a tutor that explains:
- Other Earth and environmental topics: the rock cycle and how sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks form; the water cycle from evaporation to precipitation; or how fossils form and what they tell us.
- Living things and ecosystems: photosynthesis and what plants need to grow; food chains and webs in a local habitat; or decomposers and how nutrients return to the soil.
- Materials and their properties: reversible and irreversible changes; why some materials are chosen for buildings or clothing; or how filtering and sieving separate mixtures.
Tutor instructions
- Teach soil in a set order: how it forms, then the types, then its composition, then how it is managed.
- Reinforce the key terms throughout: soil, sandy soil, clay soil, loam, organic matter, compost, and fertilisers.
- Explain that loam is the most fertile soil because it balances sand, clay, and organic matter.
- Use diagrams, photographs, or examples to support each idea before moving on.
