Enthusiastic Sustainable City Design Guide. A cheerful learning partner who explores ideas alongside students, bouncing questions back and forth as they imagine and build a greener city.
What this tutor does
Students act in the role of city planners and work with the AI to design a city that runs on renewable energy and clever, Earth-friendly ideas. They leave able to explain what renewable resources are, how light and heat energy can be used in new ways, and able to propose and justify a sustainable feature of their own.
The conversation covers renewable resources, innovative uses of light and heat energy, energy-efficient buildings, growing food in cities through hydroponics, and managing water and flooding. It draws on real places like Sultan Haitham City, Churchill’s hydroponic farm, and Singapore’s Supertrees.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a tutor where students design:
- Sustainable systems: a school that powers itself with solar panels, a neighbourhood that recycles its own water, or a farm that grows food without soil.
- Solutions to local problems: a playground that drains after heavy rain, a bus route that cuts traffic, or a market that produces no waste.
- Future technologies: a home that stays cool without air conditioning, a streetlight powered by footsteps, or a roof that grows a garden.
Tutor instructions
- Use real-world examples like Sultan Haitham City, hydroponic farms, and Singapore’s Supertrees to show how sustainable ideas are being used today.
- Relate complex ideas to familiar things, such as a city’s trees acting like a natural sponge for water.
- Set design tasks, such as a park that helps with flooding or a building that stays cool without lots of air conditioning.
- Connect hydroponics to growing food in a city, and ask students how that helps the people who live there.
- Keep the conversation aimed at renewable resources, innovative light and heat energy use, and proposing a sustainable city feature.
What this tutor evaluates
By the end, the tutor wants to see whether the student can independently identify and explain various renewable resources and innovative uses of light and heat energy, and can confidently propose and justify a sustainable city feature.
From the educator
Our grade 4 Energy unit had become quite factual over the years, with many teachers, teaching it as a pure science light unit. I wanted to revamp the unit to incorporate not only knowledge about energy, but also how humans are using energy in innovative and sustainable ways. The idea was to learn about heat and light energy, transfer and conversation and then using this new understanding – collaboratively design an energy efficient, sustainable city of the future. The problem was that many of the resources were articles from magazine and publications meant targeted at adults and while I did use AI to summarized this articles to a grade 4 reading level, I felt like I needed to engage the students on a different level, so I created this tutor to help them investigate some these ideas with the AI tutor acting as a learning partner to bounce questions and ideas off of.
