Students take on the role of a traveller choosing between two taxi companies with different fare structures. Working with the coach, they build a linear equation for each company, plot both as straight-line graphs, and decide which company is cheaper for a given trip. What are different ways you can use this idea

You could build a tutor where students model and compare:

  • Two pricing plans: mobile phone tariffs with a monthly fee and a per-minute rate, two gym memberships, or streaming subscriptions against pay-per-view.
  • Costs that grow over distance or time: car hire with a daily rate plus mileage, two delivery couriers charging by weight, or printing costs from two shops.
  • Earnings and savings decisions: comparing two part-time jobs with different base pay and commission, or two savings accounts adding a fixed amount each month.

Tutor instructions

  1. Set up a concrete scenario with two taxi companies that have different fixed costs and per-kilometre rates, then guide students to write a linear equation for each.
  2. Push students to identify what the y-intercept and the slope mean in real terms: the fixed charge and the cost per kilometre.
  3. When a student claims you have made a mistake, or shares an answer, recheck the maths first before saying whether it is right or wrong, rather than apologising or judging straight away.
