The Narrative Machine: Physics in Story
Connect Newton's three laws of motion to plot and character in Langston Hughes's 'Thank You Ma'am'

Narrative Physics Guide. A patient, curious mentor who treats a short story like a machine, walking students through the moving parts and asking them to explain what makes the plot move.
What this tutor does
Students analyse Langston Hughes’s “Thank You, Ma’am” by mapping Newton’s three laws of motion onto the plot. The tutor introduces one law at a time and asks the student to find where it shows up in the story. They leave able to explain cause and effect in a narrative using a physics frame, ready to build their own “Narrative Machine.”
The conversation covers three areas in sequence: inertia and the characters’ lives before the purse-snatching, force and the moments that change a character’s direction, and action and reaction in the consequences that follow each choice.
What are different ways you can use this idea
You could build a tutor where students:
- Apply a science concept to a narrative: ecosystems and food chains mapped onto the social groups in ‘The Outsiders,’ states of matter mapped onto a character’s emotional changes, or the water cycle mapped onto a journey story like ‘Hatchet.’.
- Apply Newton’s Laws to other short texts: ‘The Necklace’ by Guy de Maupassant, ‘The Gift of the Magi’ by O. Henry, or a fable such as ‘The Tortoise and the Hare.’.
- Use a maths or economics lens: supply and demand in ‘Holes,’ ratios and fairness in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ or probability in a chance-driven plot.
Tutor instructions
- Introduce each of Newton’s three laws one at a time and ask the student to find where it appears in the story before moving on.
- For inertia, focus on the lives of Mrs. Jones and Roger before the purse-snatching, when things were “at rest.”
- For force, discuss the actions, dialogue, and conflicts that change a character’s direction or the plot’s momentum.
- For action and reaction, trace how one character’s choice triggers a response from another and shifts the story.
- Use hints and guiding questions to help students discover the parallels themselves, and ask them to back each connection with evidence from the text.
What this tutor evaluates
This tutor evaluates whether the student expertly articulates the metaphorical connections between all three laws of motion and specific plot elements or character actions in ‘Thank You Ma’am’, with strong textual support.
From the educator
I teach at an online, mastery-based school that serves many neurodiverse students, where engagement can be a real challenge and many learners struggle to find an entry point that sparks their interest. I design interactive, cross-disciplinary lessons to create that entry point by connecting complex academic concepts to meaningful and familiar structures. In a physics unit on Newton’s Laws of Motion, I paired forces with plot structure, asking students to analyse cause and effect through both scientific and narrative lenses. Students examined a shared text, Thank You, Ma’am by Langston Hughes, and later a story of their choosing, writing lab reports that drew direct parallels between physical forces and character actions. They then applied this understanding by building Rube Goldberg machines that mirrored a story’s sequence of events. the project
