When students understand what is expected of them on an assessment, that’s a step in the right direction for success. In the language and literature classroom, where interpretations come in all shapes and sizes, it is important to illustrate how students should approach their responses. Using assessment exemplars is a great way to do that! Not only do exemplars provide guidance on what students are expected to do, they also encourage student ownership of learning.

We’ve curated an exemplar of a student response to an IB-style paper 2 prompt. We’ve also included teacher annotations and a markscheme to illustrate criteria-specific facets of the response. Use this exemplar to help students recognise what high-quality work looks like and foster a deeper understanding of assessment expectations for paper 2.

Ideas for using the resource:

Have groups of students grade the exemplar and then compare notes about the final grade each group awarded
Give students unannotated copies of the exemplar and have them mark these up with reference to criteria-based requirements. Discuss how the exemplar achieved those requirements and then share the marking notes for them to reflect on.
Provide students with the annotated copy of the exemplar and have them flesh out the kind of comments that would correspond to the annotations.
