Helping students understand what success looks like on assessments is a crucial first step towards preparation for the same. As language B educators, it is important that you illustrate dimensions of high-quality work for students to reflect on. Using assessment exemplars is a great way to do that! Not only do exemplars provide guidance on what students are expected to do, they also encourage student ownership of learning.
We’ve curated exemplars of both internal and external assessments in language B, including the individual oral assessment (IOA) as well as paper 1 and 2. Use these exemplars to move beyond the descriptions of assessment tasks found in course outlines and assessment rubrics, and help students develop a deeper understanding of assessment expectations in language B.
Ideas for using these exemplars:
- For the IOA, have students listen to the exemplar recording and create questions they might ask the performing student during the follow-up discussion
- For paper 1, have groups of students grade the exemplar and then compare notes about the final grade each group awarded
- For paper 2, utilize the sample question types to have students create their own. Or work together with your teaching team to generate questions using these as samples!
