When teaching students a new language, helping them express themselves with new vocabulary and turns of phrases can be empowering. Learning how to write for different audiences and purposes, and understanding how to produce an appropriate written response for a given situation, are important skills when it comes to language acquisition. Not only does this help students appreciate cultural contexts and build clear communication skills, it is also crucial to performing successfully on assessment components like Paper 1.

These templates will help you support your students as they build competence in creating multiple text types of their own! Use these templates to get your students to reflect on text aspects like meaning, context, and tone. Scaffold the nuts and bolts of written texts like blogs, articles, and letters and help them develop a deeper conceptual understanding of situations to produce nuanced responses.

Ideas for using these templates:

Divide students into groups and have them work on one text type to produce a response using the scaffolded template
Provide students with sample text types and have them mark out the different parts of the text using the scaffolds in the template
Swap out the sample text with another one you’re teaching and have students share their reflections about the key message using the template

Mariana, who is originally from Rosario, Argentina, earned her college degree in Second Language Learning with a focus on English and Spanish. She worked as an English language instructor in various contexts in Argentina, the US and Spain. It was there that her role evolved as the school moved towards a more international approach to education by pursuing IB accreditation. She took an active role in the process in different areas: academic policy writing, curriculum mapping, and programme development. Her roles in these past years have varied between CAS coordinator, IBDP language A and B educator, and IB DP coordinator. She has been a part of the wider IB global community in various capacities including professional development and curriculum review.
